New laboratory facilities at Paignton Community and Sports Academy

A new laboratory at Paignton Community and Sports Academy’s Waterleat Road Campus has been successfully project managed from start to finish by the TDA’s Property Services department.

Due to an increased intake for 2016, Paignton Community and Sports Academy required an additional laboratory to be provided ready for the new Autumn term. An existing general classroom in a wing of the building which was constructed in the 1980s was converted into a Laboratory, together with the provision of a new Preparation Room.

The TDA also provided the architectural and structural engineering services for the successful project which was completed on time and on budget.

Torbay’s elected Mayor Gordon Oliver said “It is great news to see schools in Torbay investing to meet the growing demand for high quality facilities. The transformation from old to new is dramatic, with vastly improved state-of-the-art facilities and an excellent teaching space.”

Kevin Atkinson, Head of Property Services Team at TDA said “We worked closely with Paignton Community and Sports Academy on this project. The new laboratory will modernise students learning environments providing attractive, well equipped facilities that engage students as they learn about science.”

The £90,000 Torbay Council funded project was carried out in five weeks over the 2016 summer holiday period, with Morgan Sindall acting as contractor.

Jane English, Principal of the Paignton Community and Sports Academy said “PCSA is delighted with the new Science lab that has been installed to enable the increasing number of pupils joining the Academy to have quality Science facilities. It was a real pleasure to work with the TDA who were well organised and professional in all their dealings with the Academy and who understood the needs of a school environment and were able to work to a tight time scale. The laboratory is an excellent teaching space, just what is required to inspire young people to take an interest in the important subject of Science”.

Nigel Whelan, area manager at Morgan Sindall, said: “We’re delighted to have successfully delivered this key project which will enable Paignton Community and Sports Academy to cater for increased demand for school places and improve pupils’ learning experience by providing them with first-class laboratory facilities.”

The TDA can provide a range of diversified services to schools and academies that are considering expansions and build projects. These services include project management, bid writing and development of proposals, procurement advice, budget monitoring and reporting.
