Torre Abbey Museum has experienced record sales this year for its second annual open air cinema festival with nearly 2000 people buying advanced tickets.

Organised in conjunction with The Barn Cinema and Dartington Arts, the festival promises two weeks of alfresco cinema amongst the abbey ruins and under the stars. Highlights include Back to the Future, The Jungle Book, Grease (40th Anniversary Sing-Along Special), Groundhog Day, The Princess Bride, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and a sing-along version of The Greatest Showman. Due to popular demand, The Greatest Showman, is being screened five times.

Executive Lead for Tourism, Culture and Harbours, Cllr Nicole Amil, said: “It is wonderful to see this fantastic cinema festival returning to Torre Abbey this year. We have been staggered by the ticket sales, particularly Grease, the Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Greatest Showman. People obviously love a good sing-along, and I am sure the great weather has got everyone in the mood for some cinema magic under the stars.”

Jim Whittle, Cinema Manager and Film programmer at the Barn Cinema said: ”This is our 9th season of outdoor cinema and the advance bookings for our Torre Abbey dates have been the busiest ever. The Greatest Showman has proven to be a massive hit with outdoor cinema audiences all across the UK and we’re really looking forward to bringing this huge blockbuster to Torquay.”

The organisers are encouraging fancy dress for several of the films, while a fully licensed bar and a range of cinema snacks and popcorn will be on sale. Tickets are available for most performances, including The Greatest Showman on Wednesday 15 August. For more details and the full line-up in full, visit www.torre-abbey.org.uk
