Did you know today, 21st January, is National Hug Day…
It’s pretty cold out there and we have all heard of the recent Blue Monday and people feeling a little low at the start of the year. So, can a simple hug raise your spirits?
Studies have shown that physical contact between humans is essential for overall mental and emotional well-being and can actually improve psychological development, boost your immune system and decrease stress.
National Hug Day first began in 1986 by Reverend Kevin Zaborney in Caro, Michigan. He chose January 21 because it fell in between Christmas/New Year’s and Valentine’s Day; it’s also in the dead of winter, a time period where most people’s spirits are low.
According to the Medical Daily, when you hug someone, you are offering a form of social support and receiving some in return, and this serves as protection against stress and sickness
So get out there today and hug someone… it could make you, and them, feel good.
