Two new non-executive directors have been appointed to join the Board of Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
Jacqui Marshall joined the Trust on 14 April 2016 and Robin Sutton started in his post on 1 May 2016, both for an initial term of three years.
Jacqui is an experienced Human Resources and Organisational Development Director who is comfortable operating in a large complex public service organisation. Jacqui’s current role is Deputy Registrar and HR Director at the University of Exeter. She also brings board experience as a Trustee of a charity and board level experience within Whitehall. An organisational change specialist with merger, transformation and cultural change expertise she has direct and relevant experience to bring.
Jacqui’s role as Trustee at Young Bristol has helped her to understand the role of a non-executive director; contributing to strategy, governance and risk in addition to supporting the executive, but not interfering with day to day operations.
A senior civil servant by training, Jacqui comes across as politically astute and adept at influence in complex environments. Her Ministry of Defence (MOD) roles have a large organisational and development / transformation component, leading to new ways of working and streamlining services. She also led the people aspects of merger of the two large MOD organisations; Defence Logistics Organisation and Defence Procurement Agency.
Robin is a chartered accountant with over thirty years of financial experience gained at a senior level for both private and public enterprises in both executive and non-executive director roles.
Robin has previously held non-executive director and senior positions at several multi-national organisations including Sifam, Fianium Holdings, CompAir Holman and Rolls-Royce PLC.
Robin’s interest in healthcare stems from a variety of different factors, ranging from consulting for Lowell General Hospital in Massachusetts through to working with Novartis in developing ultrafast fibre laser technology for eye surgery. He has also been heavily involved with care services and social care covering a spectrum of services from meals on wheels, day care, supported living and residential care. Robin has also enjoyed completing an Innovating in Healthcare program with Harvard University with a team of like-minded individuals looking at smart phone applications in the field of dementia.
Welcoming Jacqui and Robin to the Board, Chairman Sir Richard Ibbotson said: “We are delighted to welcome both Jacqui and Robin to our Board. Our non-executive directors play a vital role in running local health services in Torbay and South Devon. I am certain that the Board, and ultimately our patients, will benefit immensely from Jacqui and Robin’s vast experience of service.”
Speaking following her formal appointment, Jacqui said: “I am proud and passionate about the NHS and cannot wait to contribute to the Trust especially as it is an organisation that is so focused on its patients and service users. I also really look forward to working closely with my non-executive and executive colleagues, operational staff and patients to continue improving the Trust’s performance and quality of services for local residents.”
Robin added: “I strongly believe in integrated health services and I am really looking forward to using my experience to help continue the good work that has already taken place in to our new model of care.
“My experience as a Board Member has taught me the value of firm challenge, open debate and then corporate action and I am delighted to be appointed to the Trust’s Board.”
The role of non-executive directors includes contributing to the overall strategy of the Trust, scrutinising performance and making sure that financial controls, governance and assurance systems across the organisation are robust and transparent. They also work in partnership with the Trust’s governors who represent both staff and public members in local communities.
