Discovering the Cary Family

A rich source of Torquay history will soon be available for people to use at the Devon Heritage Centre thanks to a project being run by the South West Heritage Trust.
The Cary family archive consists of 400 boxes of maps, letters, deeds, architects plans and other papers, spanning over 750 years of history.
The Carys lived at Torre Abbey for almost 300 years and were very involved in the growth of Torquay as a town during the nineteenth century. In the early twentieth century they became key patrons and fundraisers for Torbay Hospital. The modern-day Louisa Cary children’s ward is named after a member of the family.
The collection includes plans for thousands of Torquay buildings. If you live in a house in Torquay that is a hundred or more years old, there’s a good chance it could feature in the archive! There are plans for the old Torbay Hospital building (now Castle Chambers flats on Union Street), the old Town Hall (most recently used as ‘Bar Envy’ at the bottom of Abbey Road) and the Royal Lyceum Theatre (the previous location of the Central Cinema in Torquay).
The Carys were a Catholic family and played an important role in the construction of the Catholic church on Abbey Road in 1854, and in adding the Chapel of the Sacred Heart in 1904.
The archive is being cared for at the Devon Heritage Centre which is based in Exeter https://swheritage.org.uk/devon-archives/. We also run sessions at Torre Abbey four times a year where people can request to see documents https://swheritage.org.uk/devon-archives/visit/torbay-archive-service/. A detailed catalogue is being created, and the Cary archive will be fully available from January 2024.
