Torbay Coastguard said on Facebook: “Whilst the team were out on a patrol of Torbay we received an immediate request to a dog that had gone over the cliff at Roundham Head, Berry Head Coastguard we’re also tasked to back us up for a potential Rope Rescue.

“Sadly as we arrived a member of the public had scrambled down the cliff to help the family, but the dog had not survived the fall.

“Our thoughts are with the family during this terrible time.

“We do have to add our safety message with two points. Please keep your dogs on leads around cliff tops and secondly please do not put yourself in a place of danger. Dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard,”
