The dog was saved by heroic cliff technicians using an animal rescue bag and safely reunited with its relieved owners at the top of the coast path.

A spokesperson for Plymouth Coastguard and Rescue Team on Facebook added “what3words app was vital for the teams being able to quickly locate the area of the incident.”

what3words enables those in need to precisely communicate their location so breakdown services and emergency service operators can find them quickly and efficiently. The location technology is used by over 85% of UK emergency services, and is an invaluable tool in the emergency response toolkit.

what3words has divided the globe into a grid of 3m x 3m squares and given each square a unique combination of three words: a what3words address. For example, you can enter ///proud.into.swan which will take you to the Cornish Hideaway at Fort Picklecombe. Find your what3words address here.

The app is free to download for both iOS and Android devices, and works offline, making it ideal for use in areas with an unreliable data connection such as festivals, national parks, and campsites. The technology is available in over 50 languages, too.
