Two companies based at EPIC (Electronics and Photonics Innovation Centre) in Torbay, have been shortlisted in the 2021 Tech South West Awards, which represent the best in tech from across the region. There were over 200 entries for this year’s awards from across the wider South West and the judging process involved four days of deliberating to reach the final shortlist.
Nanusens, a specialist in the field of microelectronics, are shortlisted as a finalist for the Innovation Award. Nanusens chose EPIC as their UK headquarters, from where they are developing market disrupting technology. Nanusens shrink sensors and build nanoscale sensors, which can be used in everyday items such as smartphones and earbuds, allowing additional space for larger batteries and additional features. These pioneering sensors are new, exciting and innovative technology; the reason for Nanusens recognition at these awards.
Dr Josep Montanya from Nanusens said, “The South West is bursting with world-leading tech organisations and it is truly fantastic to have been recognised in these awards, alongside many outstanding companies.”
Bay Photonics, also based at EPIC, makes the shortlist for Tech Company of the Year Award (under £5m). Bay Photonics are specialists in Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) assembly and packaging. With world class engineering expertise and facilities, Bay Photonics has become the ‘go to’ leader for ideas on innovative PIC packaging. Their recent growth and success have earnt them this recognition at these awards.
Glenn George from Bay Photonics said, “We are incredibly proud to have been shortlisted in these awards. We would like to thank everyone involved in making the awards possible and for shining a light on some of the great things happening in Torbay and the wider region.”
Bay Photonics and Nanusens both moved into EPIC last year. Located in Paignton, EPIC, managed by TDA, is an internationally recognised centre for R&D, product design and manufacturing in high-tech photonics and micro-electronics. EPIC provides access to over £2M state of the art equipment. Already home to several multinational tech sector companies, EPIC provides a unique opportunity to operate within an excellent supply chain and in an area rich with engineering expertise.
The centre continues to evolve around the needs of its tenants and has seen many enjoy exciting growth over the past few years, in part due to the benefits of their collective collaboration, innovation and investment.
TDA, along with the global leaders already based at EPIC are committed to major ongoing investment in the region.
TDA, on behalf of Torbay Council has submitted a bid for up to £20m from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund. Part of these funds would focus on a programme of works that will create a new Electronics and Photonics Production Park, building on the strong foundations already built in this sector through EPIC. The new Park would drive manufacturing and production in a sector that has a high export potential, plus create higher value jobs. This project highlights the ambitions for Torbay and demonstrates how the area is responding to the Government’s challenge for places such as the Bay to build stronger economies.
Andrew Robertson, Chair of the Hi-Tech Cluster said, “It’s fantastic to see so many ground-breaking organisations and innovations from across Torbay and the South West tech scene on one shortlist, which stands as a testament to the strength of the sector. Congratulations to all the finalists and in particular to Nanusens and Bay Photonics.”
Nanusens and Bay Photonics will find out if they have won their respective award when the winners are announced at the Tech South West Awards ceremony, taking place in Plymouth on 25th November.
