Fire crews called to fire at block of flats in Torquay

Emergency services were called to reports of a fire at a block of flats in Torquay in the early hours of this morning, Sunday 19 June.

Fire appliances from Torquay, Paignton, Teignmouth, Totnes, Ivybridge and Martock (Somerset) attended the incident in the Wellswood.

All persons in the building were accounted for.

A spokesperson from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “Fire control mobilised 2 fire appliances and 1 aerial ladder platform from torquay and 1 fire appliance from Paignton.

“Once on scene, crews promptly confirmed a fire within a flat with 4 BA, 1 hose reel jet and 1 safety jet in use and also requesting a fourth appliance. This was mobilised from Newton Abbot.”

Also giving the following updates:

“01:51 – Crews have confirmed fire within a flat of 5 storey building and that all persons are accounted for. Crews are at work with 6 breathing apparatus, 3 hose reel jets, 1 covering jet, 2 smoke curtains, 2 thermal imaging cameras and a smoke hood.

“01:59 – Control received a make up message requesting a further 2 appliances. These are attending from Paignton and Teignmouth along with specialist appliances from Martock, Totnes and Ivybridge.”

The cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed. More information as ut becomes available.
