Occupants of flats in Wellswood were evacuated late last night, Tuesday 8th January after a fire was started deliberately.
The incident happened at Torwood Mount, Old Torwood Road just after 11.15pm.
Neighbours called the fire service to report smoke coming from the property.
Two fire appliances from Torquay and Paignton attended the incident at the first floor flat.
There were no casualties.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said on their website: “Shortly after arriving crews confirmed the fire was involving the front door and set to work with 2 breathing apparatus wearers using 1 hose reel jet. They quickly had the fire under control and confirmed it was extinguished at 00:01hrs.
“Once extinguished a positive pressure ventilation fan was used to clear the property of smoke. The internal hallway was 100% severely damaged by smoke, along with fire damage to the front door, but the rest of the flat remained undamaged and there were no casualties.
“This incident is now complete and duty of care has been left with the Police, after confirming the cause of the fire to be deliberate”
