Get a taste of hi-tech at South Devon College’s new Centre

South Devon College are proud to be hosting a range of fun, hands-on one-day ‘Tech Tasters’. These taster days aim to introduce participants to exciting technical concepts and fun practical skills; sparking interest and confidence to pursue further learning.

The Tech Tasters are being delivered as part of the Digital Momentum programme; a Heart of the South West Digital Skills Partnership pilot programme funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Digital Skills Innovation Fund.

The sessions running from Monday 30th March 2020 until Friday 3rd April 2020 cover robotics, games design, data science, machine learning, coding, 3D design and printing.

The sessions will introduce you to some of the key concepts of these areas like how robotics is used in the industry and what the future developments are, or how coding is used on a regular basis while learning about some of the different languages used such as Python, C++ and Javascript.

Assistant Principal of South Devon College, Steve Caunter, said: “With the recent opening of the cutting edge Hi Tech & Digital Centre and inclusion being one of our core values as a college, these taster sessions are the perfect way to find out about training opportunities available on your doorstep in this fast growing sector.

“These sessions will provide a great foundation for other courses that are available to study at South Devon College and will develop the skills needed to become more confident and successful in a digital world – both in and outside of work.”

There are some criteria for being eligible to take part in the taster sessions. To increase the number of females in this industry, the sessions are open to all women living in Somerset, Devon, Torbay or Plymouth.

But also, the sessions are looking to give all people in deprived areas the chance to experience different aspects of the world of hi-tech. Residents in a ward which falls into the bottom 20% of most deprived wards within Somerset, Devon, Torbay or Plymouth will also be eligible to take part.

See the list of eligible wards of residency here. Please note this eligibility criteria is only specific to participants who are not female.

For more information and to book onto any of the sessions, please contact Rachel on racheldurbridge@southdevon.ac.uk or 01803 540526.
