Global knitting appeal crafts hats for Torbay’s babies

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust’s Maternity Services are celebrating after their appeal for knitted baby hats has seen over 2,000 donated from all over the world.

The team recently posted on Facebook appealing for support from knitters for red, amber and green hats in different sizes. The different colours enable staff to identify babies who require an additional level of support on the ward, while keeping babies warm. For example, a baby who is born prematurely will receive a red hat, a baby who has endured a difficult labour will wear an amber hat, and babies deemed low risk wear a green hat.

The ward has now received thousands of knitted hats from across the world including France, the Netherlands, America, and even Australia!

Naomi Kelly, Ward Manager, said: “We are completely overwhelmed with the response we had from Facebook. I never expected to have this many made for us, we have received over 2,000 so far!

“I must say a huge thank you to all the knitters out there; we really appreciate the time you have put into every single hat! This is going to ensure we provide the best possible care for our babies, hopefully reducing admissions to the Special Care Baby Unit.

“However, due to the success of the appeal we are now struggling to store all of the wonderful hats. We are therefore asking our ‘knitting army’ to rest their knitting needles for the time being! We would encourage everyone to keep an eye on our Facebook pages for future appeals.”
