Guest Blog: 100 mile cycle raising funds for Torbay Brass Band

Torbay Brass Band have lost all bookings until 2021 because of COVID-19 so I am fundraising for them by cycling from Torquay to Redruth.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic Torbay Brass Band (in which I play 2nd Baritone) have had all of their engagements cancelled.
Losing the bookings we had for the summer through to Christmas means that like many other bands worldwide we face having no income for the bulk of this year.

How Torquay Votes

I have therefore decided to do what I can to help and ride my bike from Torquay to Redruth (around 100 miles) on the 26th of August 2020 in the hope that through people’s generosity this act may generate enough funds to help keep this wonderful band going until next year.

When I moved to the bay I knew very few people in the area so joining Torbay Brass was daunting but from the outset I was welcomed with open arms into what is a very supportive community and I have made many good friends as a result. I hope to complete this journey to give something back for the kindness they have shown me.

Since the lockdown all Brass bands have faced a hard time unable to raise funds by performing live. Any money that I can raise will go towards helping to cover costs such as rent, instrument/equipment repair and upkeep and to ensure we are ready to go as soon as it is safe to do so.

It hope it will also help boost the morale of the other band members who have been practicing in their own homes during lock down.
Beside the main band Torbay Brass Band also run Torbay Academy Brass which is popular in the local area and is where I first began to learn to play just 18 months ago.

The academy is open to both young people and adults, encouraging and enabling people such as me who have never read music or played before to be part of a real band. The academy is only kept going because of the hardwork and dedication of the Torbay Brass team who give up their time and energy to encourage others to learn.

If you have ever felt your heart lifted by the sound of a Brass band please consider donating to this worthwhile cause, even if its only a small amount, in order that we can all meet and play together again soon to an audience in the not too far away future.
