Inspiring Torbay’s next generation of apprentices

The first Torbay Apprenticeships Fair welcomed over 400 people through the door.

The free event inspired people looking to start their career, or upskill, by highlighting the exciting apprenticeship opportunities across Torbay. With over 200 apprenticeship vacancies on offer across all sectors there was something for everyone.

Councillor Swithin Long, Torbay Council Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration, Tourism and Housing, said: “Torbay Council supports measures to improve skills in Torbay and this event helps to achieve this. Partners across Torbay work hard to bring together businesses and training providers to develop exciting and rewarding apprenticeship opportunities. The feedback at the event from people looking for apprenticeship opportunities was really positive. Lots of them were excited to start their new careers – we have certainly inspired Torbay.”

TDA continues to build on the ambitions of the National Pilot ‘Opportunities Through Apprenticeships’ to reach school and college learners, and parents, and people looking to upskill or change their career path.

Rebecca Davies, TDA Senior Economic Development Officer, said: “We’re delighted with how well the event was received. There were 27 stands with over 200 apprenticeship vacancies, from employers and training providers, as well as organisations offering advice and guidance. Our mission is to increase the number and value of apprenticeship starts in Torbay, and this event certainly helped achieve that.”

Opportunities in Art, Media and Publishing, Engineering and Manufacturing or Science and Maths,as well as Tourism and Hospitality across apprenticeship levels 2 to 7 were available.

On the day, attendees received additional support about CV and interview preparation, careers advice and coaching. The apprenticeship providers are now setting up interviews for their vacancies.

Matt Ranger from Seen In Design said: “It was a fantastic event and well worth attending, with a wide range of learners that each have unique skills. We spoke to about 15 people and will soon to be holding interviews.”

TDA are now reviewing all event feedback with the ambition to run another event during National Apprenticeship Week, 3-7 February 2020. For any advance enquiries please contact rebeccca.davies@tda.uk.net
