Living Roof bus shelters are one of the latest measures being put in place to help make Torbay carbon neutral and tackle the climate emergency.
Fernbank Advertising is working with Torbay Council to replace all bus shelters in Torbay with newly designed Eco Living Roof bus shelters, to help make the Bay greener, healthier and more biodiverse. So far, 22 of the new bus shelters have been installed out of the total of 168 in Torbay (with a further seven currently on order) and it forms part of the Council’s continued investment in public transport infrastructure in line with the Bus Service Improvement Plan.
Benefits of the Living Roof bus shelters:
-Designed and manufactured in the UK
-Made from recycled materials
-They have a Sedum plant living roof of 16 varieties of plants which gives a flowering cycle from March to October.
-Sedums have unique qualities making them most suitable for low maintenance green roofs.
-They attract the right insects, bees etc
-They aid with carbon capture from traffic – helping to filter out pollutants and improve air quality.
-Shelters in areas where no power is available will use solar panels & low energy lighting.
It’s one of a number of measures to address climate change in Torbay with other recent and ongoing actions including working with Exeter Community Energy to recruit Community Energy Champion volunteers to help people make their homes more energy efficient and save on heating bills; installing heat pumps at Torbay Leisure Centre and at Torre Abbey’s Arid House; planting trees; plans for two new solar farms, reviews of the Council’s estate and vehicles, and plans to install electric vehicle charging points at car parks in the Bay.
Local residents are also being asked to give their views on the Torbay Climate Emergency Action Plan. The Plan has been developed by the Torbay Climate Partnership with feedback from residents and other stakeholders in the Bay, and has a range of actions that will help reduce carbon, but also help create warmer homes, make us healthier and improve walking and cycling and green some of our buildings and businesses.
