Local charity supports refugee recovery and reconnection in native Devon woodlands

A local charity is offering wellbeing, conservation and nature-based learning sessions to refugees in South Devon thanks to support from South West Water.

The Deer Wood Trust provides a safe and inclusive place for local communities, socially disadvantaged people, and all visitors to experience a deeper sense of wellbeing through woodland-based outdoor activities and therapies.

The charity’s core activities for participants are foraging, outdoor cooking, and nature connection which includes immersive and contemplative guided walks and meditation that are set to improve both mental and physical health for people of all ages and backgrounds. The courses are also designed to increase awareness of food sovereignty, healthy eating, plant-based alternatives, and deepening the connection to what we eat.

With support from South West Water’s Neighbourhood Fund, Deer Wood Trust have supported a number of refugees through a series of four forager sessions.

Lisa Pugh, one of the founders of Deer Wood Trust, said: “We are very grateful to be able to use this support to provide much-needed wellbeing days to four groups of refugees in the South Devon area.

“They will experience the benefit from the effects of ‘forest-bathing’, be guided by a qualified outdoor art therapist and have access to nourishing fresh, organic, and foraged plant-based foods, all set in this safe and beautiful woodland environment.”

Laura Flowerdew, Chief Customer and Digital Officer at South West Water, said: “Charities such as The Deer Wood Trust do fantastic work in the local area with some of the most vulnerable and socially disadvantaged members of our communities. We’re delighted to be able to provide support for such a worthy cause.”

South West Water’s Neighbourhood Fund provides support to community groups and initiatives which are set to improve the lives of residents in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset by inspiring physical activities, enhancing education, health and wellbeing and delivering positive environmental outcomes.
