Police have appealed for witnesses following an assault today in Torquay in which a woman was seriously injured.
Officers were called shortly before 5.50am to Hartop Road following reports of a serious assault involving a man and a woman that were known to each other.
A local woman, in her 40s, was taken to Torbay Hospital with life-threatening injuries and has since been transferred to Derriford Hospital.
A local man, also in his 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
He has been taken to Torbay Hospital with life-threatening injuries which were suffered during the incident.
The scene outside St Marychurch primary school has been cordoned off.
Superintendent Dave Thorne, Senior Investigating Officer, said: “I would like to reassure residents that we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
“We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the assault or the moments before it happened.”
