A mosaic has been unveiled to celebrate the life of Torquay community campaigner Marilyn Martin.
Created and hung at the Acorn Centre in Torquay, where Marilyn was the manager until her untimely death in April 2019, it represents various aspects of her busy life – both professionally and personally.
The mosaic represents the culmination of more than two years of work by people from the Positive People programme, the Crafty Fox in Paignton and people from the community.
It features ice creams because Marilyn loved visiting the seafront with her family to eat them, bushes made from handprints of her grandchildren, and pearls from a hope project in the Philippines that she supported. There is also an angel to represent her spiritual beliefs; in the centre, a picture of Marilyn and one of her beloved grandchildren, Harry, and of course, an acorn.
Family friends and colleagues gathered at the Acorn Centre last Friday for the big unveil done by Marilyn’s widower, Ivor, alongside their son, David, the centre’s current manager.
Positive People’s Natasha Talbot said “What Marilyn stood for inspired the content of the mosaic and it is now a lasting legacy for all members of the community to see and enjoy.
“It was part of the grieving process and is a fitting commemoration of her significant support and work within the community of Torbay and keeps her spirit alive.”
One of those who worked on the mosaic was Sophie Distin of the Acorn Parents and Toddlers Group who said:” Marilyn brought people together. She had a way of doing this whether they wanted to or not, and remembering that makes me laugh.”
