A new car park on Hyde Road opening on Friday 29 November ready for the closure of Victoria multi-storey car park.
This winter Torbay Council will be opening a newly created temporary surface level car park on Hyde Road in Paignton, ahead of Victoria multi-storey car park closing.
Officially opening on Friday 29 November, Hyde Road car park will offer step free and convenient access to Paignton town centre. The car park will have around 140 pay and display spaces available 24 hours a day, with dedicated spaces for blue badge holders and motorcycles.
The temporary car park has been created to prepare the town centre for major regeneration projects coming forward in early 2025.
Torbay Council has deferred the planned closure of Victoria multi-storey car park until early January 2025, to help businesses and attractions over the busy Christmas and New Year period.
Victoria multi-storey car park will officially close in early January, with demolition works starting soon after. Full details of the demolition programme are being finalised with the appointed contractor and will be shared with the community over the coming weeks.
The introduction of the temporary car park on Hyde Road is just one of several parking mitigation measures that Council officers are progressing, to ensure parking capacity is maintained in Paignton town centre over the next few years.
The Council is working with its Regeneration Partners – Willmott Dixon and Milligan to bring forward a revised design for the Hyde Road site that will still provide extra care homes in the town centre.
Cllr Chris Lewis, Cabinet Member for Place Development and Economic Growth at Torbay Council, said; “The creation and opening of the temporary surface level car park on Hyde Road in Paignton ahead of Victoria multi-storey car park closing will help shoppers transition to the new arrangements.
“We have deferred the closure of Victoria multi-storey car park until early in the New Year to support local businesses and attractions who see thousands of people head to Paignton for seasonal events.
“We will share more information over the coming weeks on the demolition programme which will be carried out phases to ensure minimal disruption to the community.”
