Award winning Licensed and Leisure Agents, Bettesworths are delighted to announce the sale of the iconic Turf Inn, a picturesque and unique, fully licensed ‘landmark’ waterside freehouse situated in a spectacular location between Exeter Canal and the beautiful River Exe, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Turf is one of the best known and loved pubs in the West Country, accessible by foot, bicycle or water only.
The Turf stands in an unrivalled waterside setting at the lock gate entrance of the Exeter canal. Superb estuary views are enjoyed southwards down the River Exe to Lympstone and the coastal resort of Exmouth, about 3 miles distance.
The Turf is one of the very few pubs in the country which cannot be reached by car. One of the most popular ways to get to the Turf is by bike or foot along the footpath from either Exeter canal via Countess Weir swing bridge or via the bridge over the railway at Powderham. Alternatively the Turf can be reached by water either by private boat or ferry.
The Turf is an imposing Grade II listed, two storey detached building with slate hung exterior elevations originally designed by James Green in 1823. The property is held on a long lease from Exeter Canal and Quay Trust and was sold at an undisclosed price.
The property comprises a bar, dining and seating areas for approximately 80 plus, a fully equipped commercial kitchen with walk in cold room and wash up, two letting bedrooms with a further three bedrooms, owner’s flat with two bathrooms and a stunning dual aspect lounge, all with estuary views. There is also an owner’s snug and separate domestic kitchen, extensive lawns and outside trade and BBQ areas overlooking the estuary together with a landing pontoon and a swing mooring.
The Turf has been run by husband and wife team Clive and Ginny Redfern and their 2 sons, Jim and Ollie since 1990. The pub has become a way of life for the family having made many friends with both customers and members of staff over the 3 decades they have been there. Clive and Ginny are now planning to retire and have a well-earned rest!
Under new ownership, The Turf will be run by Joe Hammond. Joe has a passion for delivering exceptional hospitality venues in the region and is relishing the opportunity to add The Turf to his management portfolio. He is looking to build on what the Redferns have so successfully created over their tenure and to continue to make The Turf a unique and special place to visit for many years to come.
Matt Bettesworth, who handled the sale commented ‘We are delighted for the Redferns to have found a buyer for the Turf. It has become a huge part of their life and after 33 years it was extremely important to them that we found the ‘right’ buyer. The Turf will continue to be the special place that it is and is now in safe hands for hopefully many more decades. We would like to wish the new owner all the very best with the Turf and to Clive and Ginny and very happy and well deserved retirement!’
