Paignton Zoo is going to be closed for one day. The charity zoo will be shut to the public on Tuesday 11th February so that a large tree near the entrance building can be cut down safely.
The zoo had been due to close on Monday 10th February but this has been postponed due to the weather forecast.
Zoo spokesperson Phil Knowling said: “The tree is likely to become dangerous and it’s right beside the entrance building, the raised wooden walkway into the zoo, the flamingo pond and the miniature railway track. The easiest thing to do is close the site on a quiet day in February so the tree can be cut down and cleared away before the half term holiday.
“The flamingos have been moved temporarily. It’s a shame to have to fell such a wonderful tree, but the work needs to be done. The zoo hopes to plant a new tree to replace it.”
While Paignton Zoo is usually open every day but Christmas Day, it’s not unknown for the site to close for a day or so due to bad weather. Pre-booked visits will be able to enter the zoo through a back gate. Living Coasts, in Torquay, will be open as usual from 10.00am.
