Updated: Person dies following major blaze at city flats

Update:  The police have stated that the person who was pronounced deceased at the scene was a 37 year old man.

Police are working with the Fire services and will undertake a joint forensic investigation once safe to do so and are currently treating the fire as unexplained.

Police are asking for anyone who may have information relating to this fire to contact them on 101 quoting police log 227 of the 1st January.


One person has died following a major blaze at a block of flats in Plymouth this morning.

Fire crews were called to the fire at Union Street just before 2 am.

Crews found a four roomed third floor flat completely well alight, one man had left the flat prior to the arrival of the fire service. It was later confirmed that one person was found deceased at the scene.

Three people were rescued from an adjacent flat and over 30 other people were evacuated from the building.

Crews from all over South Devon attended the incident. Crews from Plymouth, Totnes, Ivybridge, Saltash and a water bowser from Torquay assisted.

Fire crews are still at the scene, making steady progress damping down hot spots.

The area is currently cordoned off from The Octagon to Stonehouse Bridge

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Fire Service and Police.
