Police have appealed for witnesses and have said they would particularly like to trace the two women who assisted the victim as they may be able to help with enquiries.
In a statement, Devon and Cornwall Police said: “The man in his 30s was walking along Embankment Road when the boy, who was in a group of teens, rode his bicycle directly towards him.
“The boy then shouted at him and an altercation took place. The victim was punched in the head and kicked while he was lying on the ground.
“Two women came to his aid following the incident which happened between 7pm and 7.30pm on Wednesday 9 April.
“Officers are investigating and seeking a suspect who is described as around 15-years-old, white, and around 6ft 1in tall. He was wearing dark clothing and riding a dark-coloured bike.
“He was in the company of four other male teenagers, believed to be around the same age.”
