Police name missing fisherman who died at sea

Police have named the Fisherman from Kingsbridge whose body was found early this morning, Friday 18th September.

The man, who had been reported missing after failing to return from a fishing trip. His body was discovered near Gara Rock at around 3.20am and was later taken to Derriford. Family have been informed and formal identification of the body has taken place.

Police are treating the incident as non-suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

A spokeperson for Kingsbridge Police posted on Facebook:
“In the early hours of this morning Police were alerted to reports of a missing man. Gary Steere, 51 of Kingsbridge had failed to return home from a fishing trip at Gara Rock.

“Coastguard Rescue Teams from Prawle Point, Hope Cove and Dartmouth, along with RNLI Lifeboats from Salcombe and Dartmouth, the South Western Ambulance Service Trust HART Team from Exeter and a Search & Rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose were immediately dispatched and a search of the area was conducted.

“Unfortunately, at 0340hrs Salcombe lifeboat discovered the body of male in the sea. The male was taken to Salcombe Harbour where he was pronounced deceased. Police investigations are continuing this morning and a report is being compiled for the Coroner.

“On behalf of all of the Emergency Services involved we would like to offer our sincere condolences to Gary’s family. Gary was a popular local man who will be very much missed.”
