With the ongoing issue of litter and camping at Hopes Nose the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for this area has been reinstated.
The PSPO has several conditions attached to it including no camping or temporary shelters, no fires or barbecues and no littering. Anyone found to be breaking these conditions will be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) of £80. Non-payment of the FPN may result in prosecution at Court
Councillor Christine Carter, Cabinet Member for Corporate and Community Services, said: “It is such a shame that some of the visitors to Hopes Nose are treating this area of our Bay with such disrespect. It is the minority, but they are ruining the area for those of us, our residents and visitors, who want to enjoy the uniqueness of our coastline.
“A PSPO is a tool we can use to educate, enforce and prevent anti-social behaviour and supports us in ensuring that we can make the Bay a safer place for everyone. Following the use of this order in previous years we have reinstated it and it will now be in place and enforceable until December 2022.”
Tide Torbay, a local voluntary organisation, who have a shared interest to protect the natural environment for the benefit of residents and visitors of Torbay are working with Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust and Torbay Council to provide educational advice for users of Hopes Nose.
Tide Torbay, along with Coast and Countryside Trust and council officers, are authorised to issue FPNs to enforce this PSPO.
Last month more than 50 bags of rubbish, containing glass and plastic bottles, discarded food and fishing tackle have been cleared from Hope’s Nose in Torquay, read more here.
