Putting the Mad into Madagascar…

There are many extraordinary-looking animals in the world – and the giant leaf-tailed gecko is right up there among them. With its huge and apparently bloodshot eyes and unique fringed appearance, it has to be one of the most amazing creatures on our remarkable planet.

Giant leaf-tailed geckos can be seen in the Reptile Tropics building at Paignton Zoo in Devon. The eyes of this nocturnal lizard are so sensitive to light – 350 times more sensitive than the human eye – that it can see colours even at night. As for so many species on Madagascar and elsewhere, habitat destruction and collection for the pet trade threaten this species’ future.
