GEAR UP FOR HOSPICE’S 24KM CYCLE CHALLENGE, RIDE FOR ROWCROFT
Rowcroft Hospice is inviting local cyclists to gear up for its sponsored cycle challenge, Ride for Rowcroft, which takes place on Sunday 8 October.
Registration is now open for the event, which challenges cyclists to complete a 24km route while raising as much money in sponsorship as possible for people living with life-limiting illnesses in South Devon.
Those who sign up using the code RIDE17 will be able to register for the reduced price of £15 per adult ticket, normal ticket prices are £20 per adult and £12 per child, aged 12 – 15.
Last year marked the first time Rowcroft had organised Ride for Rowcroft, its first ever fundraising cycle challenge, and it is delighted to be returning to the Racecourse with the event for a second year.
Rowcroft’s Events Manager, Daniel Robson, said: “Last year our first ever Ride for Rowcroft was a huge success, with 320 people raising more than £40,000 to help local families facing the hardest days imaginable spend precious time together.
“This year we are hoping to make the event even bigger and better; we have double the number of places available to take part and have lowered our age range so registration is now open to all those over 12-years-old.”
The Ride for Rowcroft route combines smoothly tarmacked roads with country lanes and a surfaced cycle path, making it perfect for people wanting to complete their first ever cycle challenge, beat a personal best or simply spend a morning cycling through the countryside with friends.
Daniel explained: “The route snakes up from Newton Abbot Racecourse through Chudleigh Knighton and Bovey Tracey, back to the Racecourse via the Stover Trail.
“The challenge is ideal for beginners and intermediates alike, but we do advise that all participating cyclists are confident riding on roads with traffic. All cyclists must also wear helmets and have lights fitted to the front and rear of their bikes.”
Those who take part are encouraged to raise funds to help make every day the best day possible for people living with life-limiting illnesses in South Devon.
Maria Boorer, who took part in Rowcroft’s 2016 event, said: “My Mum and family benefitted greatly from Rowcroft when my Dad was ill, helping us to care for him at home for his last few weeks.
“We were keen to help Rowcroft continue to give such important care to those nearing the end of their lives, and their own families. We used to ride a lot as a family before Dad got ill, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to restart a family favourite, in Dad's memory, raising money for the team that were so valuable to us all.
“The ride was great fun, with everyone supporting each other, a great atmosphere and being helped by the wonderful volunteers!”
