Rowcroft plans open day for distribution centre volunteers

Rowcroft is opening the doors of its Distribution Centre in Newton Abbot on Wednesday 5 October for anyone who might be interested in volunteering in the hospice’s shops.

Organisers hope the Open Day, which will take place between 10am and 3pm, will give those interested in volunteering the opportunity to sign up, while raising awareness of what happens behind the scenes at its Distribution Centre on Brunel Industrial Estate, Newton Abbot.

Paul Callaghan, Rowcroft’s Distribution Centre Manager, said: “We are currently after all sorts of volunteers to help us with our day-to-day running of Rowcroft’s Distribution Centre, including warehouse assistants and people to sort through our donations.

“We are also interested to hear from anyone who might be happy to volunteer in our shops or help with our eBay store.”

The day will begin with a tour of the Centre, before attendees are given the chance to trial the work of a volunteer and chat through the different roles and opportunities available.

Paul added: “Volunteering for Rowcroft’s retail department is the perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to support the hospice; it’s a fantastic way to help raise funds for our patients and their families while making new friends, learning new skills and becoming part of a team in a busy and exciting department.”

Rowcroft’s Distribution Centre, which opened two years ago, has contributed to a 24% increase in sales for Rowcroft’s shops in the last year alone.

Caroline Wannell, Head of Retail at Rowcroft Hospice, explained: “The Distribution Centre has given us the ability to centrally sort and send stock to shops that previously might not have received a high level of donations through the door.

“The Centre has also given us a much greater knowledge and awareness of what items are being donated to the shops and which shops are most appropriate to send that stock to; enabling us to maximise value and meet customer demand.

“In addition to the benefits above, the Centre has provided us with more recycling opportunities, and the chance to develop other income streams including selling on Ebay and recycling.”
