Young readers at Kingskerswell C of E Primary School will have an even wider choice of tales to enjoy thanks to a £1,000 grant for their library from Tesco.

The money came courtesy of Tesco’s Community Grant scheme, which supports registered charities and not-for-profit organisations across the country.

Staff said the donation for books fitted in perfectly because the school prides itself on “providing a creative and inspiring curriculum that offers plenty of opportunity for challenge and success”.

Gemma Youlden, of the school’s PTFA, added: “We are very grateful to Tesco for this opportunity. The money is going to be used to purchase new library books and reading resources to encourage children to read at all ages.

“We are grateful to benefit from such a wonderful donation scheme and look forward to seeing our children enjoying their new books soon.”

Janette Parker, community champion at the Newton Abbot Tesco Superstore, praised the work that the school staff do for their pupils, week in, week out.

She added: “We’re really pleased to support them. They do an amazing job and are very passionate about what they do.

“Books help children develop their language skills and expand their vocabularies, as well as inspiring new ways of thinking and developing new ideas.

“I hope the pupils get many hours of pleasure and learn about the world around them through the new books.”

The Tesco Community Grants scheme, in partnership with the Groundwork charity, aims to support thousands of community projects and good causes across the UK. It was previously called Tesco Bags of Help.

It is open to registered charities and not-for-profit organisations, so eligible organisations can apply for a grant now. To apply for a Tesco Community Grant, visit https://tescocommunitygrants.org.uk/
