TV legend Sir David Attenborough has praised pupils at Dunsford Community Academy after they achieved the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag award. The coveted prize recognises schools which have delivered impressive ecological achievements and boosted their green credentials.

The Eco-Schools programme was established in 1994 and is now delivered in more than 70 countries across the globe. More than 1 million pupils attended an Eco-School in England in 2022-23.

The initiative was led by led by Julia Balfour, the former Head of Ecology for the Royal Parks, who has previously worked with Sir David and a dedicated school Eco-Committee. The team conducted a comprehensive environmental review of the school, including its recycling policies, energy usage and biodiversity. Specific initiatives included ‘The Big Batwatch’, planting a Royal Oak in the grounds and a ‘reduce, reuse, and recycle’ project.

Andrew Grimley, headteacher, Dunsford Community Academy said: “Our pupils have been relentless in their mission to improve their school’s green credentials and this award is a reflection on their hard work and commitment.”

Adam Flint, Eco-Schools England Manager, said: “The Eco-Schools Green Flag award is an internationally recognised symbol of high environmental standards. The pupils and school staff that earn the award deserve immense credit for their hard work, determination, and creativity. Their passion for protecting our planet is an inspiration to us all.”
