A new employability programme in Torbay called Sound Futures is helping 16- 24-year-olds get into work.
The initiative has been commissioned by Torbay Council and is delivered by Sound Communities CIC which is based in Paignton.
The Sound Futures programme lasts for six weeks and uses media, music and radio-based opportunities to engage and inspire young people. Working in this way helps to raise young people’s aspirations and confidence so that they can take ownership of their future and gain employment.
Participants take part in group sessions and work together on creative projects leading up to a final event, performance or broadcast.
They also receive one-to-one person-centred support to improve their wellbeing and basic skills training to get them work ready.
One young person who recently took part in the project said: ‘‘Sound Futures has helped me realise the skills that I have and helped me learn about myself and improved my confidence in a group setting.”
The Sound Futures project has received £99,840 from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. It is running until April 2025 and is completely free for eligible Torbay residents.

You must be aged 16 – 24, live in Torbay and not currently be in work, education or training to take part in the programme. Creative and digital tools are used in the project to develop employability skills. However, participants do not need to have a specific interest in these areas to benefit. The Sound Futures project is helping people overcome these barriers in an environment which is fun, creative and supportive.
