South Devon College say they are thrilled to share and celebrate the success of Ben Lees being awarded a £1000 tool bursary by ‘The Worshipful Company of Plumbers’, sponsored by ‘Monument Tools’ and ‘City & Guilds’. Ben has been studying for his Level 3 certificate in Gas Engineering after progressing from an NVQ2 in Plumbing, and has been a student at the college for three years.
Ben was inspired to pursue this bursary opportunity when the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) visited to speak to college students about becoming plumbing members. Through this, Ben was able to apply for the bursary, with the endorsement of his tutor, Steve Endicott, Plumbing Lecturer.
Kevin Wellman, CEO of CIPHE, was on the selection panel and shared why Ben was successful in being awarded this bursary.
“Ben demonstrated in his submission that he is passionate and enthusiastic for the plumbing and heating industry. He also has the support from his lecturers at the College which should put him in good stead for the future. It is wonderful to be able to support tomorrow’s plumbing and heating professionals through the Worshipful Company of Plumber’s bursaries scheme.”
Jamie Fisher, Sales Director at Monument Tools, was also on the selection panel for applications. “Ben was selected from a pool of over 70 applications based on the very well written response on his application form.
The applications for this bursary have grown from a handful in 2016 and our target is over 100 per year from 2020. Monument Tools have a proud history dating back to 1880 when we started as a Tool Merchant in the City of London. Joining forces with The Worshipful Company of Plumbers will help us deliver goals to ensure every apprentice studying for a P&H qualification in the UK and Ireland will do so using quality tools.”
Steve Endicott, Plumbing Lecturer at South Devon College, says “over Ben’s time here, he has shown dedication to both his studies and work. This bursary is well deserved and will help him develop and progress in his career to become a very good engineer. Well done to Ben.”
