South Devon College students celebrate excellent A Level results

South Devon College students celebrate excellent A Level results

Students at South Devon College are thrilled and relieved to discover their hard work has paid off after working through incredibly unusual circumstances through lockdown.

Students can continue their journey with their heads held high after achieving a 99% overall pass rate and 79% A*- C. Almost half of the student cohort achieved an excellent A* to B result. This continues the College’s streak of exceptionally high pass rates. The College is also celebrating high results across a broad range of technical and professional qualifications.

All eyes are now set on the next exciting chapter for this important generation, who will be instrumental in the global journey to economic recovery and fight for environmental sustainability. Today’s results have helped our students to progress along their path to success, achieving places in top universities across the country.

University Centre South Devon, part of South Devon College, is now receiving high levels of enquiries for Degree and Foundation Degree programmes through its Clearing hotline.

Matthew Harbour, Vice Principal for Curriculum and Quality said, “Congratulations to all our successful students. The results achieved today are a testament to their hard work and dedication leading up to this point and will underpin their successful progression into the future. Many of our students have now earnt the necessary grades to secure places at universities locally or further afield, taking up apprenticeship opportunities or pursuing other exciting career routes.”

“At the end of what has been a challenging and very different academic year we are especially proud of every student and wish them well with their next steps. Thanks too to our fantastic A Level and curriculum staff who despite the challenges presented by the pandemic have worked devotedly with their students to support their learning and progression.”

Chelsea Taylor from Paignton achieved an A in History, a B in Psychology and a B in Sociology. Chelsea enjoyed “the small class sizes and fun whilst learning through practical exercises and re-enactments”. Chelsea has secured her place at University Centre South Devon (UCSD) to study History.

Michaela Scott from Paignton achieved an A in Film, an A in Photography and a B in English Literature. Michaela studied at GCSEs at South Devon High School and decided to stay on as she liked the “friendly environment and teachers”. Michaela plans to study Photography or Film at Falmouth University in September 21.

Matthew Scott from Paignton achieved an A in Maths, a B in Physics, a B in Computer Science and an A in AS Level Further Maths. Matthew chose the College because of its “good reputation and facilities”. He found the tutors at South Devon College “amazing and so helpful”. Matthew has secured his place at the University of Nottingham studying Mathematical Physics. He had the following advice for others starting their A levels this year: “It’s a big step up, so make sure you keep on top of your work!”.

Laura Warren from Brixham achieved an A in Chemistry and an A in Biology, alongside studying a BTEC. She advised students who might be considering their options: “Do some careful research into you’ll need to get onto your chosen degree”. Laura has been awarded a scholarship at Exeter University to study Biochemistry after completing her Biology A Level in just one year to meet their entry requirements!

Paris Pearce from Torquay achieved an A in Law, a B in Sociology and a B in Business. Paris hopes to study a degree at Cardiff University after taking a gap year to study Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Brazil.

Benjamin Henderson from Paignton achieved an A in Maths, an A in Physics, an A in Computer Science and a B in AS Level Further Maths. He chose the college because of the range of A levels on offer and will now progress onto Bristol University to study Engineering and Mathematics. His advice for anyone starting their A Levels in September: “Work hard and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

Owen Williams from Totnes achieved an A in Biology, an A in Geography and a B in Business Studies. Owen has enjoyed “meeting new people and the fact based courses” during his time at College. He has secured a place to study Biology at the University of Bath. Offering advice to fellow students, he said: “Try to keep up with work from the beginning!”.

Places in clearing are now open across the country, where unallocated university places are matched to students. University Centre South Devon (UCSD) has a dedicated Clearing page on ucsd.ac.uk and a Clearing advice Line you can call on 08000 21 31 81 so you can find out what’s on offer locally.
