South Devon College already have a thriving team of sports professionals that students always come away inspired by and motivated to push their development further. But there’s no stopping the team growing as the College is welcoming a new member to the team, Kerry Mitchell.
The local sports therapist started her journey in the world of fitness as an adult student at the College’s Fitness Instructor Academy in 2014, when she returned to learning to do her Gym Instructor qualification. She then completed a range of fitness qualifications including circuits, children’s fitness, aqua, Level 3 Personal Training and then Level 3 Sports Massage.
Kerry developed a thirst for knowledge and has since gone on to complete FdSc Sports Therapy at Exeter University and then returning to University Centre South Devon (UCSD) to top up with BSc in Coaching.
Kerry has since continued her professional development with a vast array of additional courses to support her practice qualifying in dry cupping and paraffin wax for arthritic and joint conditions, John Gibbon’s body master diploma in Oxford and acupuncture for sports injuries.
Kerry now has her own Sports Therapy injury and rehabilitation clinic based in Paignton, which she opened in 2019, and has a huge passion for pitch side first aid and management of injury. Kerry has worked in many football and professional rugby clubs, such as Ebbe Vale, Plymouth Albion, Brixham, Newton Abbott Spurs and has also been the lead therapist in the College’s hometown at Paignton RFC for four years.
This led to Kerry working within South West motocross as a first responder and sports therapist, which has taken her skills in injury care and first aid to an even higher level.
Kerry has supported students in previous sports massage courses within the College and has now developed into becoming a lecturer herself. She will be delivering on further education courses as well as leading the adult sports massage and injuries courses and additional workshops at the College.
“I can honestly say I can’t get enough of doing what I do which not everyone can claim” Kerry said. “It’s a huge bonus to be able to work alongside the fantastic team here at the College who are so welcoming and supportive of the new role I play. I thought my journey here ended after my BSc at UCSD, so I was pleasantly surprised to find myself here again now teaching my passion and inspiring many into the industry of sports massage and sports therapy.”
There’s excitement across the team that will now be working with Kerry, a well-known and highly respected sports therapist. Her expertise will develop the opportunities available at the College for local people to train and develop in the field of sports massage, management of injuries and step of progression into sport therapy.
