South West Water has been travelling around the region to teach primary school children how they can use water efficiently and about the life cycle of this precious resource.
Over the last year, South West Water’s Community Engagement Officer, Sophie Moore, has taught over 4,000 primary school students across Devon and Cornwall about the importance of water.
Overflowing with facts, figures and engaging activities, the lessons are fun and fantastic opportunities for all children to gain a deeper understanding of where our water comes from and the water treatment process. All of which they can then take home to share with their friends and families.
Broken down into five key topics – water efficiency, drinking water, wastewater, environment, and wellbeing – each class is packed with the core learnings of how water is a crucial resource that we all need to play our part to preserve and how small changes can make a big difference.
Sophie shares simple tips on how the children can look to conserve water in their own homes, such as turning off the tap when brushing their teeth, which could save around 8,760 litres a year. Alongside South West Water’s work to find and fix leaks faster than ever – including using specially trained detection dogs to sniff out leaks in hard to reach places – all of this saved water will help to bolster supplies into the future.
A teacher from Cornerstone Academy Trust, following a visit from Sophie, said: “The children were buzzing after Sophie left, and it really inspired them with their environmental projects and year four with their water cycles. We would love to have Sophie back next year!”

Being able to help educate children is truly rewarding when I get to see them listening, learning, and engaging in my lessons. So many of them are filled with such vibrant enthusiasm to start making their own changes and go home to tell their families and friends all about it too.”
