Specsavers run Torbay Half Marathon in aid of cancer research

A Specsavers husband-and-wife team raised £2,360 after completing the Torbay Half Marathon in memory of friends and loved ones who lost their lives to cancer.

Simon and Cassie Simmonds, both work at the Torquay Specsavers store, took their total raised this year for cancer charities to £4,650.

They were inspired to raise the money after seeing first-hand how the disease affects people. Simon lost his first wife, Sophie, to cancer, as well as staff members.

Simon, the store’s ophthalmic director, says: ‘We’re so pleased to have raised nearly £5,000 this year. Too many lives are affected by or cut short by cancer.

‘We will keep raising funds this year, with the aim of doing what we can to help the organisations battling to find a cure.’

The Torquay store’s staff have been raising funds to help cancer research for four years, collecting nearly £20,000.

Cassie, assistant manager and dispensing optician at the Torquay store, says: ‘Thank you to our friends, families and generous customers who’ve donated to our efforts in recent years.’ As well as the Torbay Half Marathon, Simon will be taking part in the 100-mile Ride London 100 on 4 August, finishing outside Buckingham Palace.

The Torquay store is at 79-81 Union Street, while the Willows store is situated behind the check-outs at Sainsbury’s. Alternatively, call 01803 213833.
