A courageous Run into the Sea this Sunday will start a week of fundraising for Rowcroft Hospice and Cancer Research UK.
Employees at the Torquay and Willows Specsavers stores have experienced first-hand the effects of cancer, having lost colleagues to the disease.
So they are aiming to carry on an annual tradition of charging down the sands at Torquay seafront and taking an early-morning plunge to raise money for technological advancement in treatments and for the Torbay-based hospice, which cares for those with a terminal illness.
As well as various other fun-filled events, staff at the Torquay stores will give customers a chance to win some designer glasses frames in a raffle, with tickets priced at £1 a ticket.
Simon Simmonds, the stores’ ophthalmic director, says: ‘This is the fifth year we’ve done this fundraising week and we’ve so far collected £6,000 for these two very important charities.
‘The Run into the Sea kick-starts the fundraising, followed by bake-offs, wet sponges getting thrown at staff, cycling as many miles as we can and the raffle.
‘Our staff are so supportive and enthusiastic about this week. They just want to raise as much money as possible, and we’d be grateful of any support from our generous customers in South Devon.’
The fundraising week runs from 16-22 February. Anyone wanting to support the staff can visit the Torquay store at 79-81 Union Street or go to the Willows store behind the check-outs at Sainsbury’s. Alternatively, call 01803 213833.
