Team recognised with nursing excellence award

Dunlop Ward at Torbay Hospital has been recognised as the team winner of an annual award that celebrates nursing excellence.

Every month a patient, family or colleague nominates a nurse or midwife for a DAISY award at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, but every year the team award recognises an entire ward or department who has gone above and beyond to provide care and support.

The team on Dunlop ward were nominated by a family whose relative received palliative care on the ward.

In the nomination story, the family wanted every member of the team to be recognised for the support they provided for not just their relative, but the whole family.

They praised the team in their nomination saying: “The care my grandmother received in her final days was amazing and the staff went over and beyond to make sure my family was looked after too.

“They were all so caring and listened to our concerns and their kindness was so genuine. I would like this team to be formally recognised for their amazing and wonderful attitude and dedication to their patients.”

Chief Nurse, Deborah Kelly presented the award to Judith Hill, Ward Manager, with staff from the wider cardiology team in attendance.

The individual DAISY award has been awarded at Torbay and South Devon since December 2020. The awards are part of the international DAISY Foundation’s mission to recognise the extraordinary, compassionate nursing care that is provided for patients and families every day.

Chantal Baker, Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Lead Nurse for Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are absolutely delighted to see Dunlop Ward presented with the 2022 DAISY team award at Torbay and South Devon.

“The nominated story highlighted to the panel how the entire team really go the extra mile to make the people we care for and their families feel as cared for and supported as possible.

“We know that this is just one example of the hard work and dedication of nursing and midwifery teams across our organisation, and I would like to congratulate everyone who has been nominated and recognised.”

Judith Hill, ward manager for Dunlop ward, said: “Achieving this award is a real honour and I am incredibly proud of my team for their care and compassion shown not only to patients, but also to their relatives.”

Nominations for the monthly individual DAISY awards are open, and members of the public can nominate at www.daisynomination.org/TSDFT
