A 13-year-old boy has tragically died following an incident a canal in Exeter.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, on Clapperbrook Lane East, at around 4:35pm on Monday (5 May) after reports that a child had jumped into the canal but failed to resurface.
Police, fire, and ambulance crews attended the scene. The boy was pulled from the water and first aid administered.
He was taken to hospital in a serious condition, but despite the best efforts of medical staff, he sadly passed away. His family has been informed and is receiving support from specially trained officers.
Acting Superintendent Chris Conway expressed heartfelt sympathy, saying: “This is an awful and tragic incident, and we offer our condolences to the family who are being supported by specialist officers. We would ask that the privacy of the family is respected as they come to terms with their devastating loss.”
Police state that the death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
