Torbay Council staff recognised for long service

Twenty-four staff and six councillors of Torbay Council have been awarded long service awards.

The awards recognise the dedication and hard work of employees and councillors who have been with the council for more than 20 years.

In total, those recognised, clocked up more than 740 years of service, with many starting their careers with Torbay Council soon after leaving full-time education.

One of the council’s longest serving employees joined in May 1977, meaning an impressive 45-year career that has seen many changes.

Cllr Steve Darling, Leader of Torbay Council and Cllr Mike Morey, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Environment and Culture are Torbay’s longest serving councillors with 52 years of service accumulated between them.

The award recipients each receive a long service certificate presented by The Worshipful The Mayor of Torbay, Cllr Mandy Darling and her Guide Dog Pepsi.

Emma who started work for the council in 2002 has gone on to gain her CIPD and Post Grad degree through the learning and developing opportunities available to employees.

Denise who also started working for the council in 2002 said she was honoured to be recognised for her service and commitment.

Cllr Mandy Darling, The Worshipful The Mayor of Torbay said, “We are very proud of the hard work and dedication of our staff. This is the first time that such awards have been presented at Torbay Council and I am delighted that officers were able to swiftly act upon my suggestion for such awards.

“The long service awards are a small way of recognising the significant contribution staff have made to the council and the community over many years. Reaching such a milestone deserves recognition and I’m very pleased to be presenting the award certificates.”

The council offers a variety of roles at a range of levels and specialities, both on a full and part-time basis. Councillors who received an award are; Cllr Steve Darling (27 years), Cllr Mike Morey (25 years), Cllr Christine Carter (15 years), Cllr Dave Thomas (15 years), Cllr Ray Hill (11 years), Cllr Terry Manning (11 years).

Numbers of staff who were awarded for long service; 20 years (4), 21 years (1), 22 years (2), 23 years (1), 24 years (3), 27 years (2), 28 years (2), 29 years (1), 30 years (1), 32 years (1), 33 years (3), 45 years (1).
