Transformational project at Claylands to complete this summer

A new home for a local multinational manufacturing company at Claylands in Paignton is on target to complete this summer.

The project is now fully enclosed by the envelope cladding, allowing Castings Support Systems (CSS) Group to start their own fit out of the building. CSS will install specialist plant and machinery to commence manufacturing products for the pharmaceutical industry when the facility opens.

Councillor Swithin Long, Torbay Council Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration, Tourism and Housing, said: “Although we have all endured the latest Covid-19 lockdown over the last three months, work has continued unabated at Claylands, with the transformation of the old waste facility into a purpose-built manufacturing facility. This investment project will provide valuable business space and help support local growth, which will create new jobs and boost the local economy.”

After the successful completion of the Borough Road junction improvements on time, focus transferred to constructing the offsite drainage that would take the route into the zoo grounds and close to some of the exotic animals. With some engineering innovation introduced by Midas to avoid open excavations and through careful planning and coordination with TDA and Paignton Zoo, the works were successfully completed with no disruption to the Zoo and importantly maintaining the well-being of the wild animals.

Alongside all this, the ground remediation has continued with infrastructure works, including onsite drainage, incoming mains services and road construction.

Mike Borkowski, Business Development Director at Midas Construction, part of the Midas Group, said: “Those regularly travelling along Brixham Road will have observed the 5,500m2 factory building rising from the ground with the steel frame being erected in just three weeks and now fully enclosed by the envelope cladding. This is despite of some of the wettest and windiest prolonged periods of the year. We have aimed to minimise the impact of the construction works on our neighbours and acknowledge their patience and understanding during the development to create the opportunity in providing increased local employment in Torbay.”

The development is funded by £2M of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership’s Unlocking Growth Funding and an £8M investment in the site by Torbay Council.
