A 34-year-old woman from Sunderland was arrested on suspicion of robbery and has been bailed until Tuesday 25 April 2017.

The incident happened at around 2.30pm close to the junction of Lawn Hill and The Strand. The victim, a man in his 50’s who works in a nearby shop, was approached by two men and sprayed in the eyes by a substance and cash stolen from him.

The victim has undergone treatment on his seriously damaged eyes which had been burnt by the liquid that was sprayed at him.  He has some sight back in one eye but it is too early to state what the lasting damage or impact will be on the victim’s eyesight. The man is still continuing to receive specialist medical treatment and is being supported by family members as well as the police.
