‘Universally Challenged’ NHS staff raise £6,000 for Comic Relief

Local NHS consultants and speciality teams raised over £6,000 for Comic Relief in a University Challenge themed quiz (‘Universally Challenged’) held at Torbay Hospital.

The quiz heats took place over several weeks and culminated in the Grand Final on Comic Relief Night, 13 March 2015, when Colorectal defeated Radiology and were declared the outright winners.

Gastroenterology grabbed the second prize by beating Anaesthetics in the runners-up plate final.

A total of 20 teams took part in the heats, all of them joining in the spirit of the fundraising with varying degrees of enthusiasm, seriousness and states of comic attire. A fantastic array of fancy dress was donned throughout the competition, including space explorer suits, multi-coloured radiology lead aprons, neon wigs, and ‘Where’s Wally’ outfits.

Organiser, Sharon Boyne, Matron of Gastrointestinal Services, said:  “I would like to say a big thank you to all the teams who took part, to everyone who came along to support their colleagues, to The Cadence and Slightly Blue for providing the live music and to those who bought cakes and raffle tickets.

“It was really great to welcome two teams from Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care Trust this year; making it a real community effort. The Comic Relief quiz has been held at Torbay Hospital every second year for the past 10 years and I’m very proud to say that we’ve raised a total of £17,000 since then
