Torbay Coast & Countryside Trust has been putting together guided history walks around Cockington Country Park and Village, which will start on Wednesday 16th August. Visitors will have the chance to not just learn about the heritage of the area, but also to experience it first-hand alongside enthusiastic volunteer tour guides.
Local historian John Risdon has been sharing his invaluable knowledge and advice about the village’s rich 1000-year history, which stretches back to Anglo-Saxon times. The buildings, lakes and green spaces are all steeped in tales of a bygone era. Visitors can find out about the long-lost plans to turn Cockington into a model village, what happened to the 12-year old boy arrested for poaching rabbits at the Warren, the significance of the last Gamekeeper’s dog, and much more.
Amy Neal, a long-term volunteer for the Trust said “These tours are designed to provide the experience of a walk back in time through a village with a very unique history. The volunteer tour guides have all worked so hard and are keen to share their stories and knowledge with the public”
The Cockington History Tours start on Wednesday 16th August 2017, from Cockington Visitor Centre, in the centre of the village. They are suitable for adults and children over 10 years and there is a small charge; £2 for adults, children under 16 years go free. Tours will usually run on Wednesdays at 11am and Thursdays at 2pm and will last for around one hour. Times may be subject to change so we recommend checking with the visitor centre before booking.
