Works completed on new £1.5m wing at Mayfield School

Works on a new wing at Mayfield School in Torquay have been completed, providing additional facilities and space for pupils with complex education, health and care needs.

The school now benefits from 1:1 office and session rooms, group session rooms, a training room, mobility washrooms, accessible kitchens and storage areas thanks to the new extension.

The £1.5m project was funded by Torbay Council as part of the Children’s Services Capital Programme to improve facilities for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and disabilities.

Managed by TDA, who led on architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical design, and delivered by Nevada Construction Ltd, the 18-month project was delivered on time and within budget despite turbulence in the construction industry.

Headteacher of Mayfield School, Stuart Heron, said: ‘‘We are pleased to announce that the new ‘wing’ at Mayfield is complete and all of the associated works in the older part of the school are being used to great effect to benefit the education of our pupils. We were fortunate to have built a genuine and open relationship with the Nevada team, and TDA, and this stood us in great stead to overcome the challenges we faced ‘living in a building site’ over the year.

‘‘We are beginning to see the impact of the new spaces across the school which for our pupils will lead to progress in their Education, Health and Care Plan outcomes. Just in the first few weeks of the Autumn term we are seeing the positive impact of these improvements to the site for our pupils and staff.’’

Councillor Cordelia Law, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “Torbay Council is proud to have supported the recent developments at Mayfield school which will benefit both pupils and staff. The physical building notwithstanding, the project has also delivered excellent social value within Torbay by providing opportunities for local schoolchildren to learn about the construction industry. This includes class assemblies delivered by project partners as part of STEM week and site tours for students based in nearby Paignton. Projects like this are crucial in providing schools with the facilities and spaces that they need to enable students to thrive, and we’re delighted to have been part of it.’’
