Young wildlife fans enjoy spotting nature at summer library sessions

A chance to spot and understand hidden wildlife where we live is being offered to children in libraries this summer.

The popular ‘Wildlife Spotters’ sessions are being rolled out in August, in a partnership between Libraries Unlimited, the charity that runs libraries across Devon and Torbay, and the Exeter-based construction company Wilmott Dixon.

The sessions will show young people how to find, observe and protect the bugs, animals, reptiles and birds that can be discovered right on their doorstep.

Rachel Payne, Business Development and Fundraising Manager from Libraries Unlimited, said: “All budding young David Attenborough’s can’t afford to miss these events this summer! These free sessions are likely to be very popular as our young visitors love finding out more about the often surprising ecology and environment that’s right on their doorstep.”

The sessions are aimed at 6 to 11 year olds, are one hour long and free to attend, but must be booked in advance as numbers are limited to 15 children. They’ll be rolled out in 10 libraries across Devon and Torbay.

Daffne Aguilar, Social Value Manager at Willmott Dixon, said: “At Wilmott Dixon we take our responsibility towards the environment extremely seriously. Our goal is to make sure our construction projects always exist in harmony with the ecology of the area, and we have specialist teams devoted to ensuring this happens. We take great pride and pleasure in discovering and protecting our surrounding environment, and we know children do too.”

“We’re delighted to be partnering for a second year with Libraries Unlimited to deliver these free sessions. We know some families will struggle in the cost of living crisis to find things for children to do this summer. We hope these sessions will fascinate all the children that attend, help them understand more around their surroundings, and maybe even spark an interest in them for a career in construction.”
