This summer, Artizan Gallery’s annual Summer Open Exhibition will be running for the whole month of July, showcasing some of the finest art and artists Devon has to offer. The exhibition will feature artists working across a wide range of media, with both two-dimensional and sculptural pieces on display, with mini maquettes by internationally-renowned Klaus Pinter alongside Andrew Moody’s French Riviera landscapes and a soulful Japanese-inspired portrait by Grace Levien.
The first Artizan Open Exhibition was held in 2015 after a last-minute cancellation combined with a recent visit to the Royal Academy of Art Summer Exhibition inspired Julie Brandon to hold an exhibition with the same style and ethos (albeit on a slightly smaller scale!). This initial show ran for just two weeks, but its immense popularity has ensured that month-long Open Exhibitions are held twice a year at Artizan Gallery, one in the summer and one in December.
Open Exhibitions are usually just that – an exhibition where any artist can submit work for review and selection by the gallery to be included, allowing for a wonderful range of styles, media, and artistic philosophies to be viewed and enjoyed in the same space. Traditionally, a salon-style hang (where artwork is displayed closer together on the same walls) is employed, giving the gallery a chance to show off curatorial skills and allowing artists’ works to complement each other as they would in your home.
After a call-out to artists in late May, we have been inundated with submissions this year, and the Summer Open Exhibition is on track to being our best yet. Many artists are creating brand-new works to be debuted at the show – making Artizan Gallery probably the best place to take in new and exciting work by artists living and working in the South West.
The Artizan Summer Open Exhibition will run from Monday 3rd until Saturday 9th July and will occupy the whole of Artizan Gallery. The Artist Preview opening event will be held from 6-8PM on Friday 7th July. The exhibition is curated and stewarded by Artizan Gallery – 7 Lucius Street, Torquay TQ2 5UW.
The Artizan Summer Open Exhibition will be followed by The Power of Three: Alan Gregory, Clare Jenkinson, & Chris Pitman in August.
