Financial help for those facing hardship in Teignbridge

A £167,000 local hardship fund is launched today (Monday 18 May) to support Teignbridge residents who cannot afford to pay for basic essentials due to the pandemic.

The Teignbridge COVID-19 Hardship Fund, in association with Devon County Council, is aimed at helping people who may be ‘falling through the net’, possibly also experiencing financial hardship for the first time.

The Fund will provide up to £200 to those in financial difficulties to help with basic necessities such as food, necessary household items, essential travel costs, utility payments etc.

To qualify for support, applicants must be able to show that as a result of Covid-19, they fall into one of these categories:

– They run their own business, and cannot currently trade / their business has been drastically reduced
– Their employment situation has changed and their income now no longer covers needs
– They have lost their job due to the COVID-19 outbreak
– They have not received expected government funding (ie self-employed)
– They can demonstrate that they do not have accessible capital in excess of £500
– They have not received financial assistance from another source for the same reason.

Teignbridge residents affected financially by Covid19 and can demonstrate their need for immediate short-term financial help, can apply for a grant online at www.teignbridge.gov.uk/covid19hardshipfund or by calling the Council’s Coronavirus Hotline on 01626 215 512 for help to complete the application form.

Teignbridge Council Leader Cllr Gordon Hook said: “I am pleased that Teignbridge is part of this Devon wide approach to helping people who cannot pay their bills as a result of the impact of Covid-19.

“We hope this fund will provide short term emergency financial help while other forms of support are put in place for those facing hardship.”
