Emergency services were called to reports that a body had been hit by a number of vehicles between junctions 28 and 29 southbound at around 6.40am. The road was closed for around 8 hours.

It is thought the man, who had travelled to the UK to obtain employment, had been a passenger in a Citroen van. Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.

Devon and Cornwall Police said on their website: “We believe the man in question had been a passenger in a Citroen van travelling on the M5; we are not currently treating his death as suspicious,

“Police enquiries indicate that the man was from Bulgaria who had travelled to the UK to obtain employment.

“Family members in Bulgaria are aware of the incident and will be assisting the police with the formal identification process, and it is anticipated that this process may take several weeks to resolve,”
