On Wednesday 19 July, 11:30am and 1pm, blind legend Mike Newman will be attempting his latest challenge – to become the first blind person to take an F1 Powerboat at over 100mph.

The speedboat will be launching from Torquay harbour.

Mike Newman is the fastest blind man on earth, and currently the holder of multiple Guinness world records for both land and sea.

Executive Lead for Tourism, Culture and Harbours, Councillor Nicole Amil, said: “I am delighted that Torbay is hosting this event as it is something different and dynamic. I really hope that Mike manages to break the record as this is an extremely brave and amazing thing to do! If you are free, please pay a visit to the harbour to show your support.”

Mike Newman says he believes in chasing dreams and has always dreamt about breaking the 100mph barrier on water: “It’s been my goal for a long time. It is also a fantastic opportunity to draw attention to my charity Speed Of Sight which provides life-enhancing driving experiences for people of all ages and disabilities. We hope to raise much-needed funds to help the charity continue its work and expand its presence in the UK.”

To find out more about the charity or the record attempt, please email info@speedofsight.org or call 01617 144 567 (office), 07971161621 (John Galloway) or 07768068563 (Chris Walker).
